“What have we been missing!?”

“So is it worth it? Well I think the answer is, sadly, still no. As much as I would like to play Final Fantasy 10 on the train I have already experienced that story to death. The PS Vita will continue to spike my interest but until Sony make a conscious effort to create truly great original IP’s, you won’t see me owning a Vita anytime soon” – ThinkBad Monkey, 15th August 2013.

https://implayin.wordpress.com/2013/08/15/to-vita-or-not-to-vita/

These were my words only a few months ago and… I now own a Vita. After dealing with the difficult decision once more I was persuaded to get one by a cheap deal and even cheaper talk. I do have to say that I haven’t been playing Final Fantasy 10 on the train. I have in fact been playing Final Fantasy 9 on the train and loving every minute of it.

“return of the mo!”

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but it’s November, and in November it is now commonplace to grow a moustache to raise awareness and money for testicular cancer research. A very noble reason to grow a lip warmer, if ever there was one. Now, we here at IM PLAYIN have been facial hair fans for a good few years, why ThinkBad, Kailios, Romnom and I had moustaches before we could even say our first word!

“What do our games say about us?”

Oh Morpheus, you could tell me anything and I’d believe you, you sexy, sexy Matrix dude.

Society is a strange old thing. One minute we’re complaining about the state of our environment, the economy and world hunger and the next we’re scoffing down a double cheese burger manufactured in bulk by a corporate giant and chucking our recycling into landfill. You might be thinking to yourself, ‘what does this all have to do with video games?’. Well, nothing says more about our society than the media we digest …

And there we were sitting, playing this game, and thinking to ourselves, “well, this couldn’t get any better now, could it”. Oh Rockstar, how wrong you have made us.

“never grow too old for that sort of thing”

Now, you might think that this is one crazy title to say the least, and also very presumptuous. But what I mean is how experiences and memories from gaming can impact you in real life. So hear me out, and take that sea breeze break away from all the GTA V talk …

“… here’s what we at IM PLAYIN can’t wait to play!”

Last Sunday, IM PLAYIN visited the Euro Gamer Expo in merry old London. To say that it was exciting would be an understatement. The building was bursting to the brim with new tech, revolutionary games and next-gen goodies, as well as thousands of dedicated gamers. The atmosphere was electric and you could cut the levels of excitement with a knife. We found some real gems to look forward to this year, so here’s what we at IM PLAYIN can’t wait to play!

“RTS Games helped me pass history”

Suburbian Bucharest, Summer 1992. Ogaja was the first word that came out of my mouth. Not Mommy or Daddy, but my mispronunciation of the Romanian word for Toy (Jucarie). It seemed that my mind was set on playing more than anything from a very young age. Winter 1996. My mesmerized vision was set on the screen of my family’s brand new Intel 4.0. The freshly installed Windows 3.11 did not hold many games my parents could entertain me with, but it did contain one magical application under the name of Minesweeper. That moment when I set my first embarrassing high score, I was prompted with a window that asked for my nickname. And that’s where Ogaja 3.11 was born …

“A challenge has been issued”

Now some will say that I didn’t quite get the idea of this Top 5 thing, but to those people I say “Nonsense!” My second favorite ‘game’ in the RTS week top 5 is the Command & Conquer Series. There are too many games in this series for me to break them all down but I might do that at a later date.

RTS WEEK - 3

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away”

Number 3 in the list is Sins of the Solar Empire and all of the expansions that go with it.

The story is set in a galaxy far far away (not that galaxy!) some time in the future. You play as one of three empires fighting over the planets within. Each empire has their own ships, ranging from the capital ships, which are the big beasts that just blow everything up, to the smaller cruise ships that fill in the bulk of your forces and lets you swam the enemy whilst allowing the capital ships to deal the real damage.

Blitzkrieg 1 and 2, I know it’s a cheat and believe me, I would love to review them separately but for now I will have to do them together.

So, on I put the glasses (bright orange in this case) to see if I could crack the wonder in the short time I had to enjoy them.

SR Vs GTA“Guns, fast cars and a lot of fun”

Both of these games have had their share of heavy hitters in the past decade. And, apart from an ‘I’ in font of the Roman numeral, is there really any difference between the two? In essence, they will both be the same game – a gang based story in a sandbox game world, but that will be where the similarities end. The best way to imagine it is this; GTA V is the sensible older brother who got a good job and settled down in an apartment in the city and Saints Row IV is the mental younger brother that starts house fires and steals cars. Obviously GTA goes off the rails on occasion, but Saints Row never even found them in the first place.

Vita“That is the question”

I have never been to bothered about the PS Vita, having had a lot of time to play around with the PSP I was never too impressed, not by the console itself but by the support that Sony seemed to put behind it. There did not seem to be any amazing games coming out and it always played second fiddle to their home console, the PS3.

“create a fantastic game”

So, we love video games here at IM PLAYIN. I know, shock horror, right? We’ve spent many an afternoon and evening debating exactly what our dream video game would be. When would it be set? What genre would it be? Who would be in it and what would it be about? So many questions to answer with so many different possibilities that would work together to help create a fantastic game. So, we’ve decided to tell you about our ideal video game … but with a twist.

“Battlefield or Call of Duty?”

It’s the age old question of which game series is better, Battlefield or Call of Duty?  Both have their merits, and each have their flaws, and over the years I’ve spent plenty of time playing both series. At different points in my gaming life I would have told you that either are my favourite games. A few years ago I would have said that Call of Duty: World at War was the best game I’d ever played, a year before that I would have said the same about Battlefield Bad Company 2.

“I hate the FIFA series so much …”

I hate the FIFA series so much, with almost every bone in my body. Yet, for some unknown reason, despite how angry and frustrated the game makes me, I always come back for more. Every year I purchase the next in the series, every year I play it religiously, every year I’m almost brought to tears by the game. But, just a few hours later, I’ll be back playing it, screaming, shouting and pulling my hair out over its stupidity. I guess I should elaborate.

“you feel like one heck of a badass”

It has to be admitted that Next Gen Gaming looks freaking incredible. The way gaming has developed over the years has been massive step after massive step – developers constantly pushing boundaries to truly involve the gamer, to create a world that makes you want to live and breathe in it. Moreover, few games have got my interest as much as the one I’m about to go over now.

“Welcome to the world of AR”

The rise of augmented reality has been a very rapid and exciting one. Those of us who have been following the goings on of AR projects have not been disappointed by the ingenuity and creativity of many exciting campaigns.

But what interests us more here at IM PLAYIN, is the use of AR to enhance gaming experiences. Now I’m not talking about putting the player in the game, or wearing headgear to enhance mainstream console and PC gaming, I’m interested in seemingly simple executions of the tech, to create gaming experiences in new and different ways, that has never been possible before.

“they needed a strong leader, now more than ever”

The head survivor, Marcus, crept towards an empty house. The group had been held up in the church for weeks, tensions were running high and supplies were dwindling – they needed a strong leader, now more than ever. He stretched out a shaky hand and clasped the door knob, tentatively twisting it to avoid any unnecessary sound. The handle wouldn’t budge, the door was locked and the windows were boarded up from the inside. There was only one way in, to barge down the door.

Sleeping Dogs

“there is nothing sleepy about this title”

Trust me, the name is deceiving – there is nothing sleepy about this title. There’s no counting sheep in Sleeping Dogs. Square Enix have made a real gem here; imagine Grand Theft Auto combined with Saints Row with a dash of Red Dead Redemption, just for luck. That’s pretty much what this game is, the best aspects of its contemporaries bundled up into one, big, exciting title. If that’s not reason enough to play the game, here are four more.

I love the Xbox and, by extension, Microsoft. There, I said it, the truth’s out – I’m an Xbox lad, through and through. It’s not to say that the Playstation is a bad console, it’s just that I prefer playing my games on the Xbox 360. However, I won’t be playing on the 360 for very much longer as, today, at 10am Pacific time, Microsoft revealed their new console – The Xbox One.

I hate Dragon’s Dogma. I hate it more than what Activision has done to The Walking Dead franchise. But, then again, I love it. It’s hard to explain. It’s kind of like that cute little puppy that chews your furniture to pieces, but it’s so damn adorable that you can’t help but forgive it. Well, Dragon’s Dogma is kind of like that.

“What’s stopping you”

It was a sad, sad day when Disney announced that it was throwing LucasArts into the proverbial trash can. It’s safe to say that LucasArts developed some of the best games on the PS1, PS2 and XBOX. Sure, Star Wars isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but everyone, at some point, would have dreamt about being a Jedi. If you say you haven’t, then you’re lying. There’s nothing more fun  than Force choking your enemies with the flick of a hand, frying their brains with lightning sparks shooting from your finger tips – I realise that these are mostly Sith powers, but the Dark Side have all of the cool abilities.

“Tips and Tricks”

The well spoke of 1999 difficulty is what had us chatting a lot here at IM PLAYIN, mostly in frustration.
